Dao Tuyển
The Dao Tuyển live in Lai Chau Province and are also referred to as the Lanten in Laos.
The Dao Tuyển are famous for a wonderful cultural history that includes the tradition of making their own paper from roots and leaves. They also have developed a writing system inspired by ancient Chinese characters and is used to document religious texts and stories. The Dao Tuyển are artisans and produce cotton cloth and wooden masks.
Their long, black clothing is made from a coarse cotton, dyed a rich black and embellished with pink or purple silk tassels and silver jewellery.
Hair is worn distinctively in a chignon and kept in place by a large silver frame (hammered aluminium) which sits on top of the head. It is then wrapped in thick black cord, producing a highly unusual headdress.
