Lu Weaving and Dyeing

Experience code: LuWeaving
We sleep, but the loom of life never stops, and the pattern which was weaving when the sun went down is weaving when it comes up in the morning. - Henry Ward Beecher

Duration: 1 day
Departure time: 8.30am - 9.30am
Return Time: Before Dusk
Difficulty: Easy

Route: Sapa - Tram Ton Pass - Binh Lu

Notes: Seasonal Availability only

Background:
For Lu women, weaving is a craft linked heavily with the coming of age and adulthood. Before getting married, all Lu girls must know how to weave and the bride-to-be will make their own wedding dresses over the months prior to any ceremony.

For those interested in artism, textile tourism and experiential learning with skilled artisans, look no further.
With regards to an itinerary, we love to keep things open and flexible. The route will involve driving up past the Silver Waterfall, through the sub-montane cloud forests of the Hoang Lien Son National park to Heaven's Gate and Tram Ton Pass (the highest road in Vietnam).  As we drop down into Lai Chau Province, we travel through a number of villages home to the Black Hmong and Tay ethnic minority groups.  These areas have beautiful rice terraces and spectacular mountain scenery.

The main element of the day will be spent in a traditional Lu stilt house, located next to a beautiful river and nestled between great mountain peaks. With time to observe and participate, the day will involve investigating natural dyeing techniques, studying materials and patters and weaving on a tradition loom.

With lunch scheduled in the middle of the day, there will be ample opportunities to learn about Lu culture and get to know your hosts.

The route will include some of the most spectacular scenery Northern Vietnam has to offer.  You will see a real mix of ethnic groups and see some wonderful natural scenes. It will be your own tour, so you will have plenty of opportunity to stop and take photos whenever you wish.
