North West Vietnam Motorbike Tour

The northwest of Vietnam is home to the country’s biggest mountains, raging rivers and an incredible diversity of hill tribe peoples. While Sapa is well and truly on the tourist map these days, there is much, much more to the northwest — and a North West Vietnam motorbike tour is the perfect way to see it!

The steep mountains of the Hoang Lien Son range begin to the north of Hanoi, and a wide variety of ethnic minority people have made its river valleys and hillsides their home. Over the centuries, local people have carved spectacular rice terraces into the mountains, and their small settlements are now connected by dramatic passes. There are now fantastic tarmac roads throughout this region.

Extreme motorcycle adventurers, however, can explore the endless single trails that cut across these mountains, as well as the bamboo rafts and suspension bridges that ford its rivers — ask us about our extended Black River rides.

It takes at least four days to reach Sapa, but you really need a week or more to get a taste of the northwest and all it has to offer motorbikers. In two weeks, you can cross over to the Far North for an unforgettable adventure! North West Vietnam motorbike tour.

Straight out of the history books, the Ural is a classic motorcycle.

Our Urals are the M67 model that were produced from the late 1970s, which we have modified with improved electrics, front disc brakes, more comfortable seats and better suspension.

The Ural has its origins back in World War II, when the Russians began to make copies of the BMW R71 sidecar. Although initially built in Moscow, production was soon moved to a former brewery in Irbitz in order to avoid the Blitzkreig. The first M72 Urals went into service in October 1942, and almost 10,000 of the motorcycles saw action along the Eastern Front.

The Minsk motorcycle started life in 1946 as the M-1A Moskva — a copy of the German DKW RT 125 — made at the same Moscow factory as the first Urals. Five years later, the factory was relocated to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, and the legend began. Our Minsks are the MMVZ-112 model, which was introduced in 1996.

Minsks were incredibly popular with farmers and couriers across the mountains of northern Vietnam from the 1970s until the mid-2000s, when they were unable to compete with cheap Honda clones.

Honda introduced its first CRFs in 2002 to replace its incredibly popular XR series of dirtbikes. Honda first released the CRF 450R in 2002, and it quickly proved itself on the motorcross circuit. It was followed by the 250R two years later.

Our model is the 2013 CRF 250L, designed as the dual sport version of the CRF series, and it’s getting great reviews from our riders!

You can expect the full range of riding conditions in Vietnam — rain, fog, wet roads, rocks, roadworks and other hazards. It’s all part of the adventure! Let us know whether you prefer riding on sealed roads, challenging trails or a combination of both. We will attempt to give you the level of adventure you are looking for, weather permitting! Please contact us if you have any questions.
