Discover the Art of Hmong Batik in Vietnam’s Northern Highlands
Learn wax-resist dyeing techniques and create your own indigo masterpiece
Step into the quiet rhythm of Hmong textile tradition in this gentle, hands on introduction to batik. Guided by skilled Hmong artisans, you’ll learn how hemp is harvested, peeled and twisted to create cloth, gaining insight into a process that has been part of highland life for generations. Working with natural cotton, you’ll create your own batik panel using traditional copper tools and beeswax, drawing patterns inspired by age old motifs and family stories.
Once your design is set, you’ll dye the piece in a natural indigo vat and watch the rich blue tones come to life. Along the way, there’s time for conversation, connection and learning about the meanings woven into every stitch and swirl.
This quiet, mindful workshop is suitable for beginners aged eight and up. Sessions are kept small and personal. Each workshop includes drinks, light refreshments and your finished batik panel to take home.
Create your own Hmong batik in this hands on half day workshop. Learn traditional wax-resist techniques and dye your design in natural indigo, guided by local artisan experts.
You’ll leave with a handcrafted batik indigo dyed piece of your own and a story that is coloured by tradition, community and care.
