Hmong artisan demonstrating traditional embroidery techniques in Sapa, Vietnam

Learn the Art of Hmong Embroidery in the Mountains of Vietnam

Hands-on cultural workshop with skilled local artisans

Join us for a colourful and creative experience with our Hmong embroidery workshop, specially designed for families with children aged 8 and up. Led by skilled Hmong artisans, this half-day session introduces young travellers and their families to the bold, bright world of traditional Hmong textile art.

The class begins with a brief introduction to the history and meaning behind Hmong embroidery. Participants will work with soft, indigo-dyed cotton panels that have been hand-drawn with traditional Hmong symbols and motifs. These designs reflect the natural world, spiritual beliefs and everyday life of Hmong communities.

Children and adults will learn how to bring these designs to life using a mix of colourful threads and simple stitch techniques. The Hmong are known for their love of colour and clever use of negative space, where bright shapes and details pop against deep blue backgrounds. You will have the chance to try appliqué and basic embroidery stitches in a relaxed and encouraging setting.

Throughout the workshop, there is time to pause and chat with your instructor, hear stories from the mountains and gain insight into how creativity is passed down through generations in Hmong culture. The pace is gentle, the environment is calm, and the focus is on fun, discovery and connection.

Each participant will leave with a small embroidered artwork that is both a personal keepsake and a beautiful reminder of your time in Sapa.

Whether your child is already interested in crafts or simply curious to try something new, this workshop offers a hands-on way to connect with culture, creativity and community.
