Meet Hmong, Dao, Ha Nhi and Giay communities in a vibrant Sunday market setting

Muong Hum is small, yet active hill tribe market, that typically attracts five ethnic groups. Taking place each Sunday morning, visitors can expect to see Hmong, Dao, Ha Nhi and Giay people trading their local wares in a very traditional and intimate village setting. Muong Hum contrasts greatly with the touristic Bac Ha or Can Cau markets, and here at ETHOS, we much prefer the authenticity and simplicity on offer. With no vendors touting souvenirs at visitors, this is a market where observing local transactions and sampling real food become the main focuses.

The geographic location of Muong Hum means that the route to the market is stunning in fine weather.  Located next to a pretty little river, there is a real frontier town feel about the area. Facilities are very basic, but Muong Hum offers a taste into what rural Vietnam is like for ethnic minority people living in the northern highlands.

The market is most active from 7am meaning an early start from Sapa or an overnight stay in Muong Hum.

There are two main options for seeing Muong Hum

1 Day Trip: To make the most of the day, an early start is essential.  Ideally, we would advise to begin from Sapa at about 7.30 am. After being collected in your hotel, you will make your way directly to Muong Hum via some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all of Vietnam.  The route takes you through the Red Dao Village of Ban Khoang and the Hmong village of Ta Giang Phin. The forest passes are lined with elfin forest, steep sided karst outcrops and mountains.  After arriving in Muong Hum, there will be plenty of time to wander around and take in the hustle and bustle.  We can try a variety of local food specialties before winding back to Sapa via some traditional hilltribe villages.  One option is Ta Giang Phin, a village that is predominantly Black Hmong.  The trek through Ta Giang Phin is essentially a big loop of approximately 4km.  The ground is fairly level and most of the walking is relatively easy.  There are three small river crossings. This is a quiet trail, with few visitors.

There will be options for some trekking (distances and difficulties can be arranged to suit your needs).

The beauty of a market lies not in what you buy, but in the lives you witness.
