Discover Vietnam’s Remote Karst Landscapes by Motorbike
This four day loop is built for riders who want the long road, the high peaks and the quiet places in between. It’s a journey across northern Vietnam’s most rugged landscapes; a blend of curving backroads, lake crossings, wild camping and cultural exchange that brings each day to life with a different rhythm. The pace is adventurous yet unhurried; the kind of ride that gives space for discovery.
Day one begins with a climb over the famous Trạm Tôn Pass, the highest road in Vietnam. The air cools as you reach the top, and the land opens into a vast bowl of peaks and valleys. Dropping into Lai Châu, the road winds through emerald tea plantations where time seems to slow. A scenic stretch of mountain riding brings you to a hidden swimming spot, perfect for a dip before taking a local raft across one of the region’s great lakes. The evening ends in a peaceful Lự (Lèn Tèn) village, where your homestay hosts welcome you with warmth and stories.
On day two, you’ll spend the morning exploring locally: riding scenic lakeside roads, swimming, or helping to catch fish for a fresh lunch. In the afternoon, the route climbs out towards your overnight campsite a vast limestone cave tucked deep in the forest. Dinner is cooked over open flame as night falls around you; the quiet of the mountains broken only by the sounds of crickets and the crackle of the fire.
Day three brings a shift in tempo, starting with a visit to a vibrant ethnic market. Colours, textures and aromas fill the air as you wander through stalls run by Hmong, Dao and Tay traders. Later, there’s a swim in a spring fed pool before trekking into hilltop villages, meeting families who live far from the noise of modern life. This is a chance to walk a little, learn a lot, and deepen the connection with the land and its people. That night, you’ll sleep in a remote guesthouse or homestay, surrounded by forest.
The final day takes you on a long, winding ride back to Sapa, circling a forested nature reserve. The roads are quiet and scenic, perfect for reflection. You’ll pass fields of maize, small farms and soaring plateaus as the ride comes full circle.
Who is it for?
This loop is ideal for confident riders who want to explore deep into Vietnam’s highlands with a sense of freedom and cultural awareness. Most roads are paved, with some gravel or rocky stretches. No advanced off-road skills are required, though experience handling varied terrain is important. Nights are spent in local homes and under the stars; simple, authentic and unforgettable.
Ride the Highlands is an adventure, but it’s also something quieter: a chance to listen, learn, and experience the North through the eyes of the people who call it home.
When to travel:
Weather is always difficult to predict in this region, but spring (March - May) and autumn (September - October) are probably the best months for warmth, light, and colour. The lakes are at their most beautiful between October and March while June to August see the rice terraces at their most beautiful. These months are also typically warmer and wetter.
Our recommended months for this loop would be September to November or January to March. Other months are possible.

“When a person travels, they discover who they really are, what they can achieve, and so much more. The moment a person’s senses are brought alive, an adventure starts to be a success. The travel bug bites hard, but the motorcycle travel bites deep.”
