Route: a mountainous loop through Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang (formally Ha Giang) Provinces.
Road Conditions: paved back-roads, some extended offroad sections, light traffic, so larger provincial roads.
Travel Style: Cultural immersion and active adventure.
Accomodation: Camping, homestays and lodges.
Scenery: Mountain passes, green tea plantations, rivers, rice terraces, minority villages, remote mountain lakes, caves.

Background:
Beyond the Ha Giang Loop, we spend six days riding deep into borderbelt Northern Vietnam, far from tour buses, crowds, and the usual routes.
This journey takes us along rarely ridden mountain roads, across swinging suspension bridges and winding river valleys, into hidden caves and past waterfalls tucked into the jungle. Each night, we stay in genuinely local homestays, sharing meals and stories with Tay, Hmong, and La Chi families, experiencing daily life far from the tourist trail.
This is about cultural connection and reaching places most travellers never see. Raw landscapes, simple living, and unforgettable hospitality define this ride.
Culture and Landscape:
The two Northern provinces are known for their beautiful natural landscapes, including mountains, forests, and karst peaks. The area is also home to diverse ethnic communities, each with its own unique cultural traditions. This loop is well suited to travellers interested in exploring the cultural heritage and natural beauty of northern Vietnam.
About this route:
If you’re lucky and the weather is good, then the scenery on the loop is fabulous. The grandeur and scale of the mountains and valleys of the north is unmatched anywhere in Vietnam. The rice terraces are higher, steeper, more dramatic, and less busy than other areas of Vietnam.
Important NOTICE:
Part of this loop passes regions in Ha Giang wherte police checks are common place. There is every liklihood we will be pulled over and asked to present papers. There are two options to avoid fines:
1. Vietnamese driving licence.
2. Domestic motorbikle licence from your home country presented together with a valid International Driving permit. Full details here
