The Sapa I First Knew: Memories from a Mountain Town in 1998

Before expressways, cable cars and crowded viewpoints, Sapa was a quiet mountain town where the rhythms of life followed the seasons rather than tourism. I first arrived in 1998 as a young research assistant working with Frontier, The Society for Environmental Exploration, on biodiversity surveys that would later help inform the creation of Hoàng Liên National Park.

Over the following thirteen weeks, I lived under canvas, crossed rivers on foot, shared meals with Hmong families, explored forests few foreign visitors had seen and discovered that the greatest lessons often came not from scientific fieldwork, but from the people who welcomed us into their world. This is a personal account of a very different Sapa, where the market still served mountain communities, children came to camp to practise English and friendships formed in the rain have endured for nearly three decades.

When Beauty Becomes Backdrop: Traditional Villages and the Future of Sapa

Beyond the bright lights and rapid construction of Sapa town lies a very different landscape. Across the wider valleys of Sapa district, traditional Hmong, Dao, Tày, and Giáy communities still live among rice terraces, rivers, forests, and mountain paths shaped by generations of careful adaptation to the land. Their homes were never built to dominate the mountains, but to belong within them.

This article explores the remarkable architecture and cultural traditions of northern Vietnam’s mountain villages, from smoke-darkened timber homes and flowing kitchen water systems to open-door hospitality and communal building practices. It also examines the growing tension between landscape-sensitive design and the rise of oversized tourism developments that increasingly threaten to overwhelm the natural beauty and cultural identity of the Muong Hoa Valley.
